The difficulty of Diligence

It’s been a really long time since I’ve posted in this blog and I definitely have a new perspective for consistent bloggers. I realize how difficult it is to maintain something even as easy as writing out your thoughts and sharing it with people who may or may not listen.

Even more pressing is maintaining something that may now expected of you that might be not be a norm for you. We all have these experiences; think about maybe when you started a new job and brought in some candy or some sort of treats for your new coworkers to share with you to show your kindness. How many times have you brought back that candy? Don’t worry I answered none too.

When something isn’t part of your typical routine it’s difficult to make it stick. Hence why we’re humans, we’re a creature of habit and love to do things that have that constant or stable reinforcement. That’s where diligence comes in; where you need conditioning to change a maintained behavior to a more desired behavior.

Diligence is as simple as setting up constant signals to help trigger specific desired actions. Setting a specific day to bring in candy to work, placing the word candy on your desk towards the end of the prior day, stopping at the store on your way home from work and leaving candy in your car.

One behavior I have diligently practiced is eating right and maintaining consistency with that behavior. In the past I used to just grocery shop for healthier food items and think it would all come together. It wasn’t long before I discovered I was still eating crap food and throwing away more of the healthier Items because they would go bad or I’d have them for too long.

It was such a waste of my efforts, time and most importantly money! I understood that I needed to be diligent and consistent from grocery store to meals but I was missing specific actions that would help me accomplish consistency. To help myself change I started, not only prepping my meals for the week every Sunday, I made sure to pack all my meals for the day the night before.

I set a trigger date to meal prep, and also made sure to grocery shop weekly the day prior to ensure meals would be enough for the week. I also started experimenting with odd foods to spark my interest and provide reinforcement. I even discovered Greek yogurt! Oh my goodness it’s ridiculous!! If you hate yogurt like I did, you need to give yourself a easy in by trying some Greek yogurt, granola and your fruit of choice; strawberries for me. PHENOMENAL!!

Honestly my example is so basic but you know yourself and what triggers your memory and motivation to act in your desired way. We all know how easy it feels to just maintain routine and stay doing things that have us just go through our days. Its extremely difficult to be diligent especially intentionally. My challenge to you is for you to create ways to be intentionally diligent and execute on the actions that drive and reinforce any new desired behaviors.

The Need To Be Contented

One cold evening late in December, a group of alumni who were well established in their careers, got together to visit their old professor. After arriving at his residence, each began to boast of their individual successes, and before long old rivalries began to surface. Their only common thread seemed to be bitter complaints about the stresses each of them experienced in their workplaces and in their daily lives.
The professor listened quietly, then offered his guests a cup of hot chocolate. He went to the kitchen and returned with a large container and an assortment of cups, porcelain, plastic, glass, crystal; some plain looking, some expensive, some quite exquisite, telling them to help themselves to the hot chocolate.
When all of his former students had a cup of the chocolate in hand, the professor said: “If you noticed, all the nice looking expensive cups were quickly taken up, leaving behind the plain and cheap ones. While it is normal for you to want only the best for yourselves, that is the source of your problems and stress. Be assured that the cup itself adds no quality to the hot chocolate. In most cases the cup is just more expensive and in some cases even hides what we drink. What all of you really wanted was the warm drink, not the cup, but you consciously went for the best, most attractive cup…and then you began eyeing and envying one another’s cups.”
“Now consider this: Life is the hot chocolate, the jobs, money and position in society are the cups. They are just tools to hold and contain Life, and the type of cup we have does not define, nor change the quality of Life we live. Sometimes, by concentrating only on the cup, we fail to enjoy the warm drink God has provided us. GOD MAKES THE DRINK, NOT THE CUPS.
Enjoy your hot chocolate! And remember: The happiest people don’t have the best of everything. They just make the best of everything.”

@CHARITYWATER; September Campaign for Thirst: Rwanda

I was recently turned onto a charity that I felt compelled to share by my friends at Lifestyle Of Change! Charity Water, a non-profit organization, based in New York, New York, who focuses on bringing clean water to developing countries around the world. Lifestyle Of Change has continued to work with organizations that inspire rational decision making within business and culture. Whether a product is helping a social cause or impacting the environment positively, the Lifestyle Of Change team wants to share and spread the word about these systematic change agents.

It’s no surprise that these two have partnered up!

Founded by a former nightclub promoter, Scott Harrison, Charity Water‘s mission is fueled by the nearly 810 Million people on the planet that lack a source of clean water. Their mission is backed by their simplistic yet action packed approach to making an impact in lives of the less fortunate around the world. According to their website, “We’re not offering grand solutions and billion dollar schemes, but instead, simple things that work. Things like freshwater wells, rainwater catchments and sand filters.”

In September, Charity Water is working to bring clean water to families in Rwanda and have set out a campaign towards this cause. The Lifestyle Of Change Team have set a goal of $1000 in the month of september and I am excited to help spread the word and help Charity Water achieve the results of helping multiple families in Rwanda. Together, we can make a difference in the global water crisis, so let’s start here! I hope you’ll consider helping on Charity Water‘s Rwanda Water Campaign. 100% of donations directly fund water projects.

Don’t Wear White The Day After Labor Day! But If You Do Stand Out!

I never realized An etiquette existed for the days following labor day!

According to the article below by Time Magazines Laura Fitzpatrick, these unwritten rules have existed since the early 1920s.

Rules on fashion and dress etiquette are however meant to be broken, especially by those who tend to have the spotlight of fame and power of influence.

This influence inspires fashionistas alike to bend the rules and pull off, sometimes, enigmatic combinations of outfits.

Today’s young generation aspires to be Different, Real, Genuine and Original. It’s safe to say that more often than not these unwritten rules of fashion are bent to the extreme and on the verge of a break today.
